Tips to Have a Crook-Free Holiday

The holiday season is a joyous time, but it’s also one of the most dangerous times of the year. Crooks are on the prowl and looking for any opening to snatch your identity, money and personal belongings away. If you want to keep the bandits at bay during the holidays, use these smart shopping tips.

When You’re Out and About

  • Keep your purse close to your body to discourage pick-pocketers and purse snatchers.
  • If possible, leave small children at home. People who are distracted by kids are prime targets for thieves.
  • If you are shopping with kids, designate a meeting spot just in case you get separated. Also, teach children to get help from store security or store personnel if they get lost.
  • Have your car keys ready when you walk to your vehicle. Check under the vehicle and in the back seat before you hop in.
  • Lock bags and packages in the trunk so they are not visible to others.

Keep Online Shopping Secure

  • Update the security software on your computer before making online purchases.
  • Make sure someone is home to receive packages. Crooks will steal them right off your doorstep.
  • Never respond to emails requesting that you verify or update credit card information or passwords unless you initiated the contact.
  • Buy from companies you know and trust. Before you buy, look for a padlock icon in the “http” bar or on the bottom of the screen to ensure the site is secure.
