Thanksgiving History and Trivia

Most Americans know the semi-factual tale of the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims, thankful for the help of their indigenous neighbors invited the Indians over for a bounteous feast, and the two cultures bridged their differences, essentially inventing the annual “Thanksgiving” holiday. It wasn’t until Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of thanks in 1863 that Thanksgiving actually became an “official” and widespread American holiday.

Here are some other fun facts about Thanksgiving:

  • To “talk turkey” means to be truthful and serious
  • Americans consume around 535 lb. of turkey on Thanksgiving Day

  • Only male turkeys gobble
  • The tradition of football on Thanksgiving began in 1876 with Princeton vs. Yale
